Alaska Destinations
Anchorage: Our home from 1978 to 2005, and one of the most beautiful cities
on Earth, Anchorage is surrounded by six different mountain ranges and Cook Inlet,
Knik Arm and the Turnagain Arm.
Home to about half of Alaska's population the Anchorage bowl stretches from
Peters Creek to Girdwood, and encompasses some of the most spectacular
scenery to be found in Alaska.
Panoramic views to the north of Mount Susitna (Sleeping Lady), Mount Foraker
and, of course Denali (180 miles away and still a spectacular sight!) can boggle the
mind!
To the west, an amazing view of the Alaska range with it's active volcanoes Mount Spurr,
Mount Redoubt, Mount Illiamna, and if you're up on the hillside on a clear day you can see
all the way down to Mount Augustine, 200 miles!
Anchorage is the hanging flower basket capital of the world! It truly is a city of flowers.
The almost endless summer days and the Maritime climate make for an incredible growing
season and Anchoragites take full advantage of it to beautify their surroundings at every
opportunity!
With over 139 miles of bike/ski trails a wonderful hike is literally footsteps from your door
no matter if you stay in a downtown hotel or a hillside B&B. In Centennial Park, you will feel
as though you have gone into the Alaska wilderness (as indeed you have) without ever
leaving the city.
The Anchorage Museum and The Alaska Native Heritage Center are must-do's.
Just walking around downtown, doing some shopping and taking in the atmosphere
in the summer months is a fun way to spend a day.
Anchorage has it's fair share of great restaurants, so here are a few of our long
time favorites; Simon and Seaforts is a great seafood and meat restaurant with
incredible views of Cook Inletand the possibility of seeing Beluga whales from
your dinner table. The Glacier Brewhouse hasgreat food and the best bread pudding ever.
Orso, right next door to the Brewhouse has wonderful Italian food. The restaurant at
the top of The Captain Cook hotel is expensive, but some of the best food and an
amazing view so well worth the price! Marx Brothers is probably the finest restaurant
in town, and priced accordingly.
So many visitors to Alaska either skip Anchorage all together or spend only as much time there
as they have to thinking that they aren't coming to Alaska to "spend time in a city". We try to
encourage our folks to spend a day or 2 in Anchorage because there is a feel to it like no other city...
It's got all the advantages of a city and still feels very much like a small town.
