Alaska Landmarks

Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve
Glacier Bay is one of the most overwhelmingly beautiful, interesting, educational and exciting places we’ve ever been!  Glacier Bay has some of the tallest mountains in the world feeding glaciers into it.  At one point as recently as 1750 one massive glacier filled up the entire 65 mile long fjord!  Its’ retreat has exposed the resilience of the rain forest beneath it and a bay teeming with wildlife and offering all of us the hope that there are still places on this planet unsullied by human hand.

Glacier Bay is a highlight of any Alaska cruise, so please make sure that not only does your cruise go there, but that you go there for more than 4 hours or so.  A lot of the permits issued are for a quick 4 hour turnaround in Glacier Bay.  This gives the cruise lines the right to say your itinerary goes there, but you barely scratch the surface in that amount of time.  If your itinerary does not say how long you are in Glacier Bay, please, please do some checking!  We have talked with hundreds of folks who were so disappointed with their Glacier Bay experience precisely because of this.  Again, and we hate to keep bringing this up, but that is why we almost exclusively book with Holland America.  All of their Glacier Bay sailings are 8 hours IN the Bay itself, not just a quick in and out!
