Mount McKinley
At 20,320 feet Denali, as she is locally known is the highest point in North America and one of, if not the tallest mountain on earth. The difference between highest and tallest is if you stood on a ladder you’d be higher than, but still not taller than Michael Jordan.
Denali in the native tongue means “The Great One” or “The High One” and she is certainly that. From where we lived in Anchorage to Denali is about 180 miles as the crow flies, yet on a clear day from almost any place in Anchorage you can look north and not only see Denali but be amazed by her! From 180 miles away she can dominate Anchorage’s skyline.
We should mention here that very few Alaskans ever call Denali Mt. McKinley. It is commonly referred to by the locals as "The Mountain" or just plain "Denali". |
