Mount Susitna
Unless the clouds are hanging very low over the Anchorage bowl, if you look north and a little west from almost anywhere in town you’ll see Mount Susitna, lovingly known locally as “Sleeping Lady”.
Native legend has it that Alaska was once inhabited by a race of giants. When a far off war called the male giants away, the Sleeping Lady decided she would lie down and sleep until her mate came home. Unfortunately her mate didn’t make it back from that war and the other giants decided not to wake her, so she sleeps still and dreams of her love.
From many angles of her throughout Anchorage you can definitely discern her shape and we think she is beautiful both in her setting and the story. |
